If you're part of lots of different groups, you may find yourself wishing you could somehow differentiate between all of them in iMessage. This wikiHow will teach you how to name a group on iMessage. However, you won't be able to name the group if at least one person in the group doesn't have an iPhone. If every user in the group has an iPhone (or iPad), every group member will see a timestamped message that you have changed the group name once the group name is changed.

Steps

Open Messages . This speech bubble on a green background app icon is somewhere on one of your Home screens or in the Dock.

Open the group message you want to name. Everyone in the group has to use iMessages, so if someone doesn't have an iPhone, they are using SMS/MMS instead and your group can't be named.

Tap . This lowercase "i" inside a circle icon is near the top of the listed group members next to the icons for audio and FaceTime.

Tap Change Name and Photo . It's the blue text under the group icons at the top of your screen. If someone in the group doesn't have an iPhone, you won't see this option.

Enter the new name for your group. You may need to delete existing text if there is any.
- You also have the option to take a picture, use a photo from your Gallery, or use an emoji/Memoji to add an image to your group.^[1]

Tap Done . It's in the top right corner and will apply the new changes to the group and everyone in the group conversation will see a notification that the group name has changed.^[2]
- You can also use this group name when you're giving commands to Siri.
- If you add an Android to a named iMessage group, you'll lose the group name and naming ability.
